Fluoroquinolones are antimicrobial agents effective in the treatment of selected community-acquired and nosocomial infections. Fluoroquinolones are bactericidal and exhibit concentration-dependent killing. Fluoroquinolones are widely distributed throughout the body. Tissue penetration is higher than the concentration achieved in plasma, stool, bile, prostatic tissue, and lung tissue. Fluoroquinolones also penetrate in urine and kidneys where renal clearance is the route of drug elimination. Fluoroquinolones are associated with a post-antibiotic effect in a number of bacteria, principally gram-negative. The most frequent side-effects are gastrointestinal reactions (nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting) and CNS reactions such as dizziness, insomnia and headache.
