Oxytetracyline calcium complex (C22H22N2O9 Ca) is an agricultural antibiotic pesticide (microbiocide) derived from Streptomyces soil bacteria; it is used to control bacteria and fungi in agricultural crops. Tetracycline’s are characterized by their antimicrobial efficacy against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Tetracycline can persist in soil for long periods of time without showing antimicrobial activity and high concentrations can be achieved. The major impact on human health from tetracycline use is the increase in the pool of antibiotic resistant bacteria that can lead to resistance in human pathogens. However other health effects are associated with exposure to tetracycline such as developmental toxicity.
